Judging from the ingredient list, "Hempz - Age-Defying Herbal Body Moisturizer" works well for improving skin hydration The formulation is based on a combination of good humectants and emollients. Both are needed to increase the skin hydration level. Humectants in this product (glycerin, sodium lactate and butylene glycol) help to increase the water content in the upper layer of the skin. (These ingredients do so by "capturing" water molecules from the outside air or from within the deeper layers of the skin). Emollients in this formulation (cannabis sativa seed oil, butyrospermum parkii butter, dimethicone, helianthus annuus seed oil and cetyl alcohol) help to reduce the moisture loss from the skin. Ingredient callouts
- This product also contains vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid). It can be an effective active for anti-aging and evening out the skin tone, but in this moisturizer it is used for stabilizing other ingredients in the formulation. In this concentration (0.20% - 0.40%) it cannot have a noticeable benefit for the skin.
- This moisturizer includes a form of retinoids (vitamin A) - retinyl palmitate 0.25% - 0.50%, but this type of vitamin A is not very effective. It could in theory help with fine lines and wrinkles, but the effect is most likely minimal.
- This moistruizer also contains peptides (palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 0.10% - 0.15%). Peptides is a very big group of ingredients. They all consist of a different combination of amino-acids. The scientists are still studying how effective the topical application of peptides is, but it is very likely that peptides in skincare are helpful.
