Pos Ingredient Name Description
aqua Plain old water
alcohol denat Produces temporary toning effect. Can help dissolve other ingredients or preserve products
butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane Avobenzone. A broad spectrum sunscreen meaning that it can protect against both UVA rays. Currently, it is the only sunscreen ingredient available in the US (approved by the FDA) with the peak absorbance within the UVA I range. It loses its effectiveness quickly when exposed to sunlight. It is an organic, or so called "chemical" sunscreen. When used in low concentrations, helps stabilize the product formulation
ethylhexyl salicylate Octisalate. A UV filter. It offers some protection against the sun rays that cause sunburn (UVB), but does not protect against the most aging sun rays (UVA). It loses its effectiveness quickly when exposed to sunlight. It is an organic, or so called "chemical" sunscreen
butylene glycol dicaprylate-dicaprate Helps soften the upper layer of the skin
ethylhexyl triazone Uvinul T. A UV filter. Effective against UVB rays. It is photostable. Can increase water resistance properties of the sunscreen. Unfortunately, not approved by the FDA (US) yet
bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine Tinosorb S. One of the most effective broad spectrum sunscreen ingredients. Protects from both UVA and UVB rays. It is photostable. Unfortunately, not approved by FDA (US) yet.
homosalate A weak sunscreen that offers some protection against the sun rays that cause sunburn (UVB), but does not offer meaningful protection against protect against the most aging sun rays (UVA). It loses its effectiveness quickly when exposed to sunlight. It is an organic, or so called "chemical" sunscreen. When used in low concentrations, helps to stabilize the product formulation
octocrylene A weak sunscreen that protects against the sun rays that cause sunburn (UVB) and is somewhat effective against the UVA rays. It is quite stable and can help stabilize other, more vulnerable, sunscreen ingredients like Avobenzone. It is an organic, or so called "chemical" sunscreen
c12-15 alkyl benzoate Enhances the product texture and makes it more spreadable. Helps reduce water loss from the outer layer of skin. Extands the shelf life by preventing bacteria growth
cetearyl alcohol A non-drying alcohol. Works as an emollient. Helps water and oil mix together and creates a nice product texture
phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid Ensulizole. A UV filter that is effective against UVB rays. Does not protect against UVA light. It is photostable and can be used to help stabilize other sunscreen ingredients. It is water-soluble meaning that it can help create lighter sunscreen formulations
tapioca starch Used to create a thicker product consistency
isobutylamido thiazolyl resorcinol Sometimes referred to as Thiamidol (patented by Beiersdorf). A compound that can reduce melanin production in skin. Can help to fade pigmentation spots quicker and even out the skin tone. It is a relatively new compound and the research on it is ongoing. The first studies show that it might be as effective in reducing hyperpigmentation as hydroquinone but with fewer side effects
glycyrrhetinic acid Active compound of licorice root. Works to calm down inflammation, as an anti-oxidant, and might be helpful in lightening the skin and reducing hyperpigmentation
glycyrrhiza inflata root extract A plant extract that can help lighten the skin and calm down inflammation. Might be helpful in neutralizing free radicals
glycerin One of the best moisturizing ingredients. Naturally present in skin. It attracts water to the upper layer of the skin working as a humectant
tocopherol Pure form of vitamin E. Can help moisturise and protect the skin from free radicals. Often used to help stabilise other ingredients or the formula itself
glucosylrutin
isoquercitrin Antioxidant that might help reduce free radicals and reduce melanin production, but more research is needed to understand if it is effective in skin
chondrus crispus extract Red algae extract that helps attract water to the upper layer of the skin and create a nicer product consistency
xanthan gum Used to create a thicker product consistency
sodium stearoyl glutamate Helps oil and water mix together
glyceryl stearate An emollient that softens the skin and forms a protective layer on its surface. Helps water and oil mix together
carbomer Helps create a gel-like product texture. Can be used in gentle cleansing formulations
acrylates-c10-30-alkyl-acrylate-crosspolymer Maintains the texture of skincare products. Allows the product to spread evenly. Helps oil and water mix together
sodium chloride Used to stabilize mixtures of oil and water, and create thicker, gel-like product textures
dimethicone A silicone that helps to reduce water loss from the surface of the skin. Can temporarily "fill in" lines and wrinkles, absorb oil, and create a nice product finish
trisodium edta Helps preserve product formulations
sodium hydroxide Used to adjust the product's pH
phenoxyethanol A preservative. It helps prevent bacterial growth in cosmetic products
parfum An aromatic blend of unspecified irritating ingredients
