Pos Ingredient Name Description
water Plain old water
glycerin One of the best moisturizing ingredients. Naturally present in skin. It attracts water to the upper layer of the skin working as a humectant
tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate Being a lipid soluble form of vitamin C, it is more stable. It is claimed to penetrate skin better than pure vitamin C and have the the similar benefits, but solid studies of its effectiveness are lacking. Is likely to require a higher concentration in a product than pure vitamin C to be effective.
vitamin c One of the few well researched potent anti-aging ingredients. When it is able to penetrate the skin in an active state, it is effective against fine lines and wrinkles, helps improve skin elasticity and reduce hyperpigmentation. It acts as a powerful anti-oxidant and stimulates collagen production. The main issue with ascorbic acid is that it is highly unstable, in other words, it is losing its effectivenss quickly when exposed to air and light (if a serum or cream containing ascorbic acid has an orange color, it is a likely that the ingredient has oxidized and is no longer active). In addition, it is water-soluble, meaning that it has difficulty pentrating the skin. It is also quite irritating, and can cause stinging. When used in low concentrations, helps stabilize the product formulation
polyglyceryl-2 dipolyhydroxystearate
dicaprylyl carbonate Helps products spread more easily and works as an emollient to soften skin
cocoglycerides Help soften the upper layer of the skin and make it easier for oil and water mix together. Recently, a rising number of allergic reactions to cocoglycerides and other coconut-derived surfactants has been reported. As there is a significant overlap between frequent irritants and allergens, we flag this ingredient for attention of those with very sensitive, reactive skin
beta-glucan Helps attract water to the upper layer of the skin, calm down inflammation and irritation, restore the barrier function and support wound healing. It can be helpful in reducing fine lines and wrinkles
vegetable oil An oil from a mixture of different vegetables. Helps soften the upper layer of the skin
gallic acid
tocopherol Pure form of vitamin E. Can help moisturise and protect the skin from free radicals. Often used to help stabilise other ingredients or the formula itself
tocopheryl acetate A more stable but less bio-available form of vitamin E compared to Tocopherol. Might help moisturize and protect the skin from free radicals, but mostly used in low concentrations to stabilize other ingredients.
citric acid Can work as an exfoliant but is typically used to adjust the product pH
niacinamide Is proven to be effective in reducing blemishes, evening out skin tone and helping to improve lines and wrinkles. It helps the skin to repair sun damage, calm down inflammation and keep maintain good levels of moisture
kojic acid Helps to reduce hyperpigmentation and neutralize free radicals. Can be irritating
glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) root extract A plant extract that can help lighten the skin and calm down inflammation. Might be helpful in neutralizing free radicals
hippophae rhamnoides oil A good emollient. Contains various ingredients including vitamins and fatty acids that could work in the skin to neutralize free radicals and minimize moisture loss - if enough of these compounds is able to penetrate the skin in an active form.
passiflora incarnata flower extract
calendula officinalis flower extract A plant extract that has some anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties. Can be irritating
citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel extract
citrus grandis (grapefruit) peel oil A plant oil with high content of volatile compounds that, especially when exposed to air, can cause allergic reactions and irritate the skin
citrus limon (lemon) peel extract A very irritating fragrant ingredient
citrus reticulata (tangerine) peel extract A likely irritant. Might have some anti-oxidant activity, but is mostly used as a fragrance in cosmetic products
rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract Can be helpful in reducing inflammation in skin. Is a likely irritant
helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil A great emollient due to its high linoleic acid content. One of the most effective plant oils in helping skin hydration and repairing skin barrier function
camelina sativa seed oil
polymnia sonchifolia root extract
punica granatum fruit extract
caprylic/capric triglyceride A good mix of fatty acids that forms a protective layer on the skin. Improves the shelf life of products. Derived from coconut and glycerin
lauryl glucoside Helps oil and water mix together
glabridin
phenoxyethanol A preservative. It helps prevent bacterial growth in cosmetic products
sodium lauryl glucose carboxylate Helps water and oil mix together and works as a cleansing agent
algin Used to thicken product formulation. Can help attract water to the upper layer of the skin
sorbic acid A preservative
xanthan gum Used to create a thicker product consistency
