More exfoliation or more moisturise?

My skin is sensitive -- it feels like my skin barrier gets compromised pretty easily! I've revamped my routine over the last year and it's in a pretty good place BUT my skin seems congested on the forehead and dry on the cheeks. So I'm wondering:

1. Should I increase exfoliants? I use retinol twice a week (0.1% so it's low) and could increase that to 3 times plus increase to 0.3% once I'm okay with 0.1% 3 times a week. OR I could add in a different exfoliant.

2. Should I add a hyaluronic acid serum to the mix? I'm careful about adding things one at a time and waiting 3 weeks and am trying to decide whether to up the exfoliation first or the moisture.

I would recommend switching your cleansing approach - for some people, it can clog pores. Because your skin is sensitive, I'd also suggest opting for 1-step cleanse (no double cleansing). The product can look something like this: https://whatsinmyjar.com/product/neutrogena-hydro-boost-gentle-cleansing-lotion.

I don't think you need an extra hyaluronic serum. I'd also actually stop using the Dermalogica Toner, it's not suitable for sensitive skin because of multiple essential oils in it.

I'd go for increasing the retinol product (frequency and/or percentage) once you feel your skin can take it. If you can tolerate it, it probably will be the most effective way of reducing the congestion.

Sorry I had a typo above: I meant oil cleansing can clog pores for some people, so trying a non- look cleanser might be a good idea

Thanks! I was wondering about that :-) I've been thinking about swapping out the toner so will definitely do that when this bottle ends.
