I need professional help!

I need to know the order in which I should be using these products and how often! Also, my main concern is clearing my acne. Are any of these products not needed in my routines? I’ve always had acne but these past two months have been the absolute worst acne days of my life. I thought at 29 I would have been way past this! Trying to rid my skin of acne, white heads and redness I have recently started using some new products that an organic boutique sold me on! Unfortunately, my skin seems to be doing the exact same a week later. The cleanser I am using is E’minence Organic Skin Care- Clear Skin Probiotic Cleanser. Following, I apply Intensive Repair Serum-by Kristina Holey + Marie Veronique. I bought Miracle Patch by Rael beauty yesterday and apply overnight spot cover on my acne surface spots, tonight will be night #2. I also purchased Truly matcha whipped face scrub and used it to exfoliate this am. Lastly I purchased Truly hemp oil facial serum but I have not used it yet, for obvious reasons…( too many chemicals, don’t know which to use)! Please HELP!!!

I am sorry to hear the acne was giving your skin a hard time recently!. We cannot give professional / medical skincare advice unfortunately. The best route would be to get an appointment with a dermatologist and follow the anti-acne treatment regimen they'll prescribe. This way you can focus on using effective, evidence-based treatments and won't waste time and money on products that don't work...

You can learn more about effective ways of treating acne in our resource section here: https://whatsinmyjar.com/resources/acne-clogged-pores/ There are also examples of effectives routines - I hope they can help you get started.

Overall, I'll definitely recommend looking into including good concentrations of Retinoids, Azelaic Acid and Niacinamide into your routine, going for fragrance-free products, use a daily sunscreen and keep the rest of your routine as minimal and simple as possible.

Retinol changed my life! But I highly recommend making an appointment with a derm!

Agree with Maria and each skin is different, you should check first with a dermatologist. The use of specific products that are suitable for one's skin condition is decided by a number of factors that we are unaware of and only a dermatologist knows whats best for you. Hope you ll get rid of 'em soon !

I'm 29 as well. I've been fighting with acne (less severe than yours) for a couple of years (almost 5?), with various products, changing of eating habits and whatever. When it started to spread to my back I gave up any cosmetic / external solution and ended up on isotretinoids (1 pill every day). It's been almost 4 months of therapy now and I don't remember the day I had skin so smooth as I have right now. Give it a chance and discuss this possibility with your dermatologist... Stay strong ♥

Hi, hope you will find the best routine for your skin and solve your acne problem asap. I have one suspension about this routine. Has you skin condition gone bad after adding probiotic cleanser? We would never know for looking a picture even a dermatologist should have a wide search to make sure but just and idea. What if your skin is not tend to like probiotics or worst you have allergy? I have allergy to fermented products thats why I wanted to share this.

Hi Alexxx,

You look so sad. I agree you need your own dermatologist. You may be able to consult one online or ask your fam doc to refer you. In the meantime, I follow a Board Certified derm on YouTube and have learned a lot from her - Dr. Dray. She posted a video for acne sufferers recently (google this, "Get Clearer Skin with ONLY 3 PRODUCTS Dr Dray" on YouTube https://youtu.be/mFXu1YnDty4 . Also, you can google "Dr. Dray acne" or "Dr. Dray skin barrier" to learn more about skin and how to not make things worse. Good luck!

I have problematic skin (sensitive, acne prone, with hyperpigmentation) and the only thing that's worked for me is retinol (and I've tried a lot of ingredients!). I use a low dosage (0.5%) and started once a week, then twice a week for 2 weeks, now 3 times a week on going.

Hi there! I would start by reducing the Eminence cleanser to only be used at night, as you may be damaging your skin's natural barrier. If you really want to use a cleanser in the morning as well, try a sensitive cleanser like CeraVe gentle cleanser; though a splash of water in the mornings suffices for most people. ClarityRx makes a "vitamin mist" that I always use after my morning rinse off. Then follow with the serum of your choice, a (very light) moisturizer of your choice, and top off with sunscreen (zinc & titanium based - always!). Hope this helps, as I remember struggling with acne for years before I found a regimen that worked, now I am at it again for my 17 year old son (darn genetics!)

Hi again Alexxx,

I came across another "professional" video - a PhD chemist - "Scientist's Top 10 Oily Skincare & Makeup Tips" on YouTube https://youtu.be/jMZtS_BmRko

Hope education helps!

Don't feel bad about having acne at 29 - your age is arbitrary in what your skin decides to do. We forget we can't control our bodies, only influence them. Having said that, it will get better with some good advice and some patience.

I suffered from acne all the way through my 20s and most of my 30s although it did get better towards the end. I'm now 41. Retinol, Niacinamide and Vitamin C were the magic trio that helped my skin clear up along with a mild cleanser and some basic moisturisers. When you're oily, the tendency is to cleanse your face a lot and exfoliate, but I found the more I did that, the more my skin fought back with oil because the skin barrier was being disrupted. Less is more when it comes to products, and introducing new ones slowly will help you evaluate their effectiveness. Good luck :)

Hi, i am about 43 years old and suddenly i got acne on my throat, ! I bought the dermalux ledlight! It is so effective and you can use it without any harm on your face! It is not cheap but surely it helps to reduce pimples! Also did you consider to take an anticonceptiva, there is one who reduces the acne and i think it is because of your hormones, sometimes it comes during some period in time! Hooe i could help a bit

Heyyy! Don't worry, I got acne too at 29 – all due to stress and anxiety... I tried so many things but truth be told all skincare products that my skin now loves (bakuchiol, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid) were all too lightweight and the only thing that settled it down was a benzoyl peroxide gel. You can get it as an over-the-counter product at pharmacies. For me, regular skincare products are merely preventative and cannot help when the big boys roll in. (Now that my skin's calmed down, I use the gel as the world's most effective zit cream...)

But that was just me, and that's the WORST thing about acne: it's so individual and can hinge on so many things and everyone has something to say. The internet is full of success stories and content articles and it gets so confusing!! I hope you can see a dermatologist and see what she has to say. I hope you find your way out of it & see the day when the acne starts to clear soon!!

Alexx, dunno if you’re in the U.K. or Europe but I think you might benefit from either Dermatica or Skin + Me. They’re websites that provide dermatology consultations if you upload some photos & outline your concerns. They then prescribe you prescription strength product which are combined with soothing ingredients to tackle your concern. They specialise in acne & anti aging, so both ends of the spectrum. The anti aging worked amazingly well for me and I’m signing up my adult daughter now for the acne. Consultation is free, quick, then you buy your product monthly and it’s posted to you. You can alter the frequency of your order to every two months or whatever. It’s actually very cheap for what it is. I use the prescription tretinoin & it’s about UK£21 or something like that, a fraction of the price of high potency over the counter products. That lasts me 2 months as I use it once every second day. You might use yours daily. If you’re in the US I believe there’s a similar service. I don’t know the name but I’m sure I could find out if you like. I had skin like yours as a young woman so I understand how it feels. But, you look beautiful regardless and your skin type will be a bonus as you age.

hope this helps and best of luck

A few thoughts:

  1. Eliminate products containing potentially-irritating ingredients - both Eminence cleanser and Marie Veronique serum are rated high for irritancy potential!

  2. Eliminate products containing comedogenic (pore-blocking) ingredients.

  3. Always apply a facial moisturiser after cleansing (appropriate to your skin type).

  4. Think back to what changed 2 months ago: stress, diet, sleep, new skincare product, dropped old product? Try to reverse the change.

  5. Consult a dermatologist or skincare clinic for an effective routine. They may prescribe a retinol or retinoid treatment for acne.
