Hi everyone !

Please help

I am suffering from bad hormonal spots on my chin and my nose tends to be quite oily with enlarged pores but the rest of my skin is quite sensitive so how do I go about setting up a good routine I am totally lost on what would actually work and what would just be money down the drain

Hi Katypara,

I’m oily and acne prone as well as sensitive. I’d suggest staying with the following:

☀️AM

  1. Gentle Cleanser for acne prone skin

  2. Niaminicide Serum no higher than 5% (To shrink pores and regulate sebum)

  3. Sunscreen🧴

🌜PM

  1. Cleanser

  2. Differin (start slowly)

  3. Gel Moisturizer

Those are the basics. Once you find products in each category that work and don’t irritate your skin, you can assess your situation and go from there.

I can give you a couple of ideas for products as I’m sure other people here can.

Cleanser ideas:

Paula’s Choice Clear Pore Normalizing Cleanser or Kate Somerville Sulfur Cleanser. (One good thing about Paula’s Choice is that you can buy a sample size for less than the full size to see if you like it.)

Niaminicide ideas:

Glossier Suoer Pure 5% Niaminicide Serum or Minimalist 5% Niaminicide Serum (better price.)

Sunscreen ideas:

Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu Cica Water Fit Sun Serum SPF 50, Purito Soft Touch Sunscreen SPF 50 or Cetaphil Derma Control Oil Absorbing Moisturizer with SPF 30.

Gel Moisturizer:

Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer, Round Lab Mugwort Calming Cream, or Purito Oat in Moisturizer. I’ve also heard Byoma has a good gel moisturizer.

Retinol ideas:

Differin Adaptalene gel .1% (or get the Taro dupe for cheaper on Amazon). Or ask your dermatologist for Tretinoin if the Differin hasn’t made a difference after 8 weeks.)

*Sunscreen is crucial. Every day.

I hope this has helped.

PS I meant ‘I suggest STARTING with the following,’ not ‘staying.’

Hi! I would add to what SusieQue said, consider doing a sulfur mask once to twice a week. I use Dermalogica clearing fizz mask (will clear out enlarged pores of any gunk) or De La Cruz sulfur mask (a little more effective for helping acne under the skin). Very inexpensive, very effective for clearing up acne.

Also if Differin is too strong of a retinoid for you, I'd recommend A313 which is a much gentler retinoid. I'd start with Differin and if it irritates your skin switch to the A313.

Thank you so much! I used the cleanser by paulas choice and the gel moisteriser purito oat and my skin has gone bright red and itchy is that normal because my skin is getting used to it all or is it an allergy I've only just used them so it's only been 10 minutes maybe it'll fade xx

I’m sorry to hear that. I don’t think that’s normal. If it happens again, I’d try something else for the cleanser. Maybe Vanicream Gentle Cleanser? You could try waiting twenty minutes before putting the Purito on to see if it really is the cleanser.

If it’s not the cleanser, it could be the Squalane in the moisturizer. While squalane is generally considered safe and hydrating, it can sometimes cause irritation or allergic reactions in rare cases. Signs of irritation include: itching, redness, and swelling. With any skin care product, there's a risk of irritation or an allergic reaction — even when a product is determined safe.

Don’t give up. It takes time to find products that work.
