How long does it take to see results with skincare?

How long does it take on average to see results when using skincare products?

Does it depend on the ingredient? For example tret, does it act quicker than e.g. Salicylic acid?

Dermatologist recommend evaluating skincare results after 6-8 weeks of a consistent routine. Most good quality clinical trials span for one month of treatment at least. Really good ones go for 3 or even 6 months.

I think it is also different with different ingredients, and also the type of result. For example, moisturizing and exfoliation can help skin feel softer in a couple of days. Stimulating collagen takes months, so I’d say at least 8 weeks to see any first real anti-aging results.

Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide also can show the first effect on acne within a week (but the effect is still stronger with consistent application for a couple of weeks).

Retinoids (including tretinoin) definitely take time to work - it might look even a little worse for the first couple of weeks of application because of additional irritation and “purging”. I’d say 6 weeks is a minimum period to start seeing real results for acne and clogged pores, and a couple of months for noticing a difference for anti-aging.

Evening out the skin tone probably takes the longest, 2-3 months at least to notice anything in my experience.
