Hello WIMJ community

I am a 40 something female who has been struggling to manage my difficult skin since I can remember. As I’ve gotten older, my skin has changed, and I find myself not knowing how to properly care for it, and keep it healthy. I decided to reach out to different communities and educate myself more on skin care, skin products, etc. I came across WIMJ and thought I would check it out so here I am. :)

My question would be is, how do you hydrate extremely oily skin? I didn’t know it was possible to have severely dehydrated skin and extremely oily skin at the same time. I feel like it has taking me a long time to dehydrate my skin, for years I was not using a good quality moisturizer and only focusing on oil control, aka drying out my skin. I still have extremely oily skin but it’s just dehydrated now too..

Any advice, recommendations or tips would be much appreciated!

Kindly,

SB

Hi SB!

Although I have dry skin, I was really struggling with dehydrated skin as well. I went in down a rabbit hole for what could address it without irritating me/ inflammation. The best things I’ve found is Urea. Eucerin is. a powerhouse in Urea based products, I highly recommend their Dry Skin Replenishing Cream 5%

I also recommend checking out this subreddit (it was my personal guide to sorting through my dehydrated skin)

I'm 25 and I have oily, dehydrated, sensitive skin.

For the past several years I assumed I had dry skin because even though my skin was visibly oily it would also suck up the moisture from face creams. When I use a face cream such as cerave it doesn't immediately make me greasy, rather it makes me feel super hydrated. My visible oiliness builds up throughout the day/night. And so after this pattern for years I finally realized my skin is dehydrated and oily.

There's a Korean brand called Isntree. Specifically, the hyaluronic acid aqua gel cream (oily skin) and hyaluronic acid moist cream (dry skin or use when sleeping) are meant for dehydrated skin. Theres also a specific sleeping pack version but it doesn't look as great. Their aqua gel cream was formulated for people with oily dehydrated skin. Its a nice product. Both are about 3oz for $24 on Yesstyle. Its a Korean shopping website. I've been using it for the past 10 years. It takes around a month to ship to the USA.

My next option is the popular Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel Cream. Similarly to the isntree gel cream it has hydrating and calming ingredients while not being super thick and suffocating such as face creams with shea butter. You can buy this product at Target for $20 or on their own website.

In a perfect scenario you want to find a lightweight moisturizer (gel or lighter lotion) that is also hydrating. You want to find one that is oil free, and free of the super stripping alcohols.

I know there's people out there who use the Cerave hyaluronic acid serum as a moisturizer during the day if they have super oily skin. I haven't tried that product so I can't give an opinion on it.

Also I found this sunscreen recently and I'm about to buy it. I have very high hopes for it.

Inde Wild Mineral Spf Serum: 1oz $30

It has great actives such as Zinc Oxide, Centella, Rice, Niacinamide, Allantoin. It is a mineral sunscreen which I personally like and it is a serum rather than a cream. So you use it after moisturizing and its good for oily skin because of the niacinamide and zinc. Its also calming if you have sensitive skin like me with the centella. $30 is a bit much especially when you need to restock frequently but I'm going to give it a try. I'll let you know how it affects my oily dehydrated skin after a couple months of usage.
