Face masks - marketing gimmick?

I love to have a pamper on a Sunday.

I used to use elemis moisture mask but after seeing the irritancy results on here it's gone in the bin. I actually did get a bit of stinging from it. No wonder, it's packed with irritating ingredients. I love the ritual of a mask. Are they just a gimmick ? Are there any recommendations?
