dry skin +

hi wimj gang!

i am always on the hunt for skincare for very dry skin and anti aging. i really like serums and rich eye creams. ive been using a lot of kiehls, skinceutical, la roche posay and some korean skincare products.

i often have the problem that even products that are supposed to be very hydrating, dont feel like they penetrate deep layers, so my skin feels uncomfortable, dry and only surface level moisturized. same thing with eye creams, im looking for a rich, nourishing anti aging eye cream.

Hey! For me, dry skin is always because of over-cleansing or cleansing with the wrong product, more moisturiser doesn’t really cut it! Are you using something non-foaming? Just thought I’d ask as it helped me, especially in winter

I second this. I’d try to look into products you are using right now and pinpoint ingredients or steps that are weakening your skin barrier. Cleansing too harsh/ too much is the number one suspect. Then fragrances and essential oils.

once you’ve “cleaned up” your current skincare routine, you could add a heavy-duty barrier-support moisturizer like a cicabalm (La Roche Posay makes the most famous one, and it’s a good product - but there are other options on the market too).

The winter issue also probably has something to do with the heated air (it’s dry). So getting a humidifier for your bedroom might be an idea as well.

Try plain squalane oil

I recently found a fantastic moisturizer from Gold Bond -Retinol Overnight (I know, but still) that has retinol and a lot of other excellent ingredients. Hence, it ticks the anti-aging, but I might even recommend just Vaseline. Even though the consistency is very thick and it's not penetrating the skin, the fact it stays on top of the skin keeps a lot of the moister already in your skin from dissipating out, it's one of the best barriers we have. Still, in terms of getting into deeper layers, my routine usually is serums and then my sunscreen and moisturizer on top, kind of like the barrier keeping it in; this seems to do the job for me, but then again, I don't have dry skin. I also might try and find a moisturizer with a lot of camelia extract because that can also soothe dry, irritated skin; often, eczema moisturizers have a lot.

As @Meh mentioned, often dryness is caused by products in the routine, so fixing it isn't about adding an extra hydrating product, but taking away stuff that weakens the skin barrier. This can be:

  • Over-cleansing or using a cleanser that is too harsh

  • Over-exfoliating

  • Irritants in products. These can be actives (like retinoids - then the advice is to reduce the frequency), or irritants without particular skin benefit like fragrance, essential oils, drying alcohol. Some sunscreen filters have a higher risk of irritation, too (for example octinoxate, oxybenzone, amiloxate)

Hi Theresa, I too have dry , ageing skin . At the moment I use Murad retinol eye cream. or Niod eye serum. I prefer a cream cleanser like Elemis. I lightly mist before an active, followed by a moisturiser. Even a separate neck cream, Last a hydrating sunscreen. A mist throughout the day is helpful but only if needed.

I have very dry skin and the one that makes my eye area feeling more nourished is skinceuticals age. But am looking for a cheaper often that penetrates without clogging
