Cracked lips

So, my lips goy REALLY REALLY dry two weeks ago and thet "cracked" (if that makes sense) about a week ago. They seem to have some blood and the lip skin is broken. It really hurts and I can't even eat, as it feels painful, tingling and itchy. I'm using the La Roche Posay cicaplast, vaseline and beewax (fragrance free) lip balm several times a day, but my lips won't heal. It's been exactly a week. What else can I do? I'm desperate 😭

Hi Skinaddict! 😊

Depending on the severity of the crack, it can definitely take over a week before it heals. This article explains that most chapped lips heal within 2 to 3 weeks with their self-care advice: https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/skin-care-basics/dry/heal-dry-chapped-lips#:~:text=Apply%20a%20non%2Dirritating%20lip,or%20higher%20before%20going%20outdoors.

I hope your lip heals soon!

i hear that laneige lip masks are good though i haven't tried it myself - frudia also have good options which are cruelty free (unlike laneige)

This happened to me and it didn't resolve until I stopped using a vitamin c serum.

Some skincare makes the skin really dry, you may want to check whether anything in your skincare is potentially drying.

Ohh my God! I just started tretinoin 🥲. Maybe I need to back off a little until they heal?

If you don't want to stop the tretinoin, then maybe add a moisturiser on top (one that's gentle & really moisturising).

If that doesn't help, then it could be that the tret is too drying and you need to try something else.

Hope your lips have healed by now. I see you had started using tretinoin. The areas around the eyes, nose and mouth are very sensitive to tret and are best avoided. Tret can damage the skin barrier there and cause inflammation. I avoid these areas now as when I started using retinols I gave myself perioral dermatitis by applying there. That looks like teeny dotty blisters almost. A prescription cream called Rosex is the only thing that cured that (cream not gel as recommended by Nadine Baggot). Even now if I go even near my mouth with tret, my lips will be slightly raw. Then I use LRP Cicaplast to soothe. It’s a great repair agent. Hope you’ve recovered though.

Hey i had the same thing during summer where i scrubbed my lips with a toothbrush and later on had the same issues as u. Avoid scrubbing your lips all together, since it breaks ur lips’ natural barrier and can introduce bacteria which can cause an irritation. What helped me was lots and lots of vaseline especially at night. goodluck!

It's funny how possibly the least "sexy" product like vaseline delivers the best results for lips. I found it works better than any lip balm for me too.
