A plant extract that is, though different in chemical structure, acts similar to retinoids. First studies show that it can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin tone, reduce clogged pores and blemishes, and reduce inflammation. There is no conclusive evidence that bakuchiol is as effective as retinol however. The study that directly compared retinol with bakuchiol used bakuchiol applied twice daily compared to once per day for the retinol. According to this study, bakuchiol is less irritating than retinol. Bakuchiol is extracted from seeds of Babchi plant. Other parts of the plant contain coumarins that could cause allergic and irritant reactions. These compounds should be removed in the extraction process when bakuchiol is produced, but it is a good idea to be cautious and stay away from products that include the Babchi plant extracts other than purified bakuchiol to avoid irritation

111 Subjects had to be 12–25 years of age, present with mildto-moderate acne Treatment: Adapalene 0.1% gel and Sébium Global cream (includes salicylic acid, backuchiol, moistruizing complex). Control: Adapalene 0.1% gel and a vehicle cream (containing mainly glycerin, a gelling agent and isohexadecane. The difference between the treatment and control groups were not statistically significant for non-inflammatory lesions (decreas from 34.4±23.5 to 15.2±13.5 lesions in the treatment group compared to the decrease from 29.3±20.3 to 14.6±8.5 lesions in the vehicle group). The difference between the groups was statistically significant for the inflammatory lesions: decrease: from 18.4±10.9 to 6.9±6.6 and from 17.3±11.5 to 10.1±10.4 lesions in the treatment and vehicle groups, respectively.

Number of participants Participants Interventions Punchline
44 Fifty healthy participants (age 47 +- 7.2 years) were recruited. Participants were excluded if they werepregnant or breastfeeding, had a known sensitivity to retinolor bakuchiol, or had a cutaneous disease that affected the face.Participants were also excluded if they had used isotretinoin inthe previous 6 months, had used a topical antibiotic or topicalretinoid in the 30 days prior to enrolment, or had used prod-ucts containing salicylic acid, b-hydroxy acids or vitamins A,C or E in the last 14 days. Smokers were excluded. Treatment: bakuchiol 0.5% cream twice daily; control: retinol 0.5% cream daily; for 12 weeks. Both creams had the same vehicle. Bakuchiol and retinol both significantly decreased wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation, with no statistical difference between the compounds. The retinol users reported more facial skin scaling and stinging.
